The language of Easter: Focus on God's goodness and love
The language of Easter is all about rising.

We are full of contradictions --- but God's love is constant
Passion Sunday is a day of contradictions. In the processional Gospel, people praise Jesus; later, in the Gospel of the Liturgy of the Word, they condemn him. His followers promise to defend Jesus, and then betray him. The people are thrilled --- and later insist on Jesus' crucifixion.

Cathedral Holy Week schedule announced
The celebration of Holy Week at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will begin this weekend with the celebration of Palm Sunday and the Lord's Passion on April 17.

There is nothing that the love of God cannot overcome
Lent is a time for us to wake up, like Lazarus, and remind ouselves that the love of God is more powerful than any darkness that we encounter.

Sight for the blind
It is well-known that Jesus gave sight to the blind. The Gospels portray him as doing so on many occasions. He also heals the sick, the lame, the deaf and the mute.

We may be frustrated --- but God is not
When I was a younger man, I worked for a high tech company that wanted to make an Initial Public Offering (or IPO) to reward its investors. Many employees also had stock in the company, and that stock offering was our focus.

The art (and ministry) of listening
I'm amazed sometimes at what a poor listener I am. Someone can be talking to me at work or at home and I'll realize after a minute or so that I haven't really heard a thing they've said, and I have to ask them to repeat themselves. It doesn't help that I'm also glancing at my computer, or my phone, or the television.

Remembering God's unconditional, limitless love
When Satan tempts Jesus in the desert, he dangles prizes that are probably recognizable to most of us.

'Soup and Cinema' returns for Lent 2011
Two parishes will offer "Soup and Cinema," the film-and-discussion series led by Capuchin Franciscan Father Tony Scannell, during Lent.

Liturgy and Worship: A High Priest, Yet One of the Baptized
With the collaboration of his brothers and sisters, Cardinal Mahony made us a better church and built us a beautiful cathedral.

The heart of an extraordinary moral code
What Jesus has to say about being truly holy, especially loving your enemy.

Embracing the fear
I've spent a good deal of my adult life trying to rid myself of fear. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of illness - at various times in my life one or more of these sources of anxiety have controlled me.

Revised Bible: 'More clarity, more detail' for today's Catholic
The revised New American Bible that will be released on Ash Wednesday, March 9, may seem most notably different to casual readers for its efforts at providing context and clarity in how the passages fit together, according to the coordinator of its publication.

God's simple rules
We are called to live lives of compassion and service. And we are promised if we do so that we will enjoy the presence of God in a powerful way.

World Marriage Day set Feb. 13 in L.A., Camarillo
World Marriage Day will be celebrated Feb. 13 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, and at Junípero Serra Church, Camarillo, recognizing couples who are celebrating a significant wedding anniversary.

How best to experience and welcome God's grace?
God is looking for people who know they need God more than anything.

Finding a path to abundant joy
I've only been lost in the dark twice - both while driving. Wrong turns in remote places, combined with the refusal to ask for directions when I had the opportunities, led to "lostness."
